SHE'S GOT GAME: RUGBY

Updated: May 13, 2020

March 2019 Pool competition Under 9 category, KL Tigers International 10s 2019.

“What the….?!” Almost speechless Field Marshall. We both looked at each other sharing a bewildered to what we just witnessed.

We both just witnessed a 9 year old girl shrugging off tackles before bowling over the last defender and scoring a super try. At the under 9 category, boys and girls are allowed to compete together. The 9 year old girl is one of the few girls on the team and she more than holds her own if not better.

Yes, Girls allowed to play full contact rugby.

December 2016 Cobra 10s Mini Under 12 Girls Category

Champions Under 12 Girls! Earlier in June, they lost every game they played at a major tournament. Undeterred, Coaches Margaret with Coaches Ina and their girls really put the time in and earned their 1st major trophy.

taken in Dec 2016. A future for girls rugby was formed.

The under 12 game for girls is "Touch" which means No Full contact tackling BUT the game is no less intense where good team play, speed and passing accuracy is paramount. It must have a lit a fire within as they have been tearing up the girls circuit. Not a team just looking for a participation medal in my view.

It’s now, 2019, these girls have grown and the fire is still lit. These girls have asked for contact rugby and the training session has started.

December 2017 Cobra 10s Ladies Tournament

Champions! Inaugural Ladies Cobra 10s Tournament sums up the progress ladies rugby has progressed throughout the years. Cobra Venom won the tournament under the stewardship of TJ and Coach Faiz, 2 Cobra Old Boys themselves.

Inaugural tournament. Inaugural win. Great Platform.

Some of the talent from the competition have gone on to represent Malaysia and won Bronze at the SEA Games competition.

Note: Some the talent were only a few years into rugby and started at zero base.

As I highlight all this, Ladies Rugby in Malaysia relatively new. It has taken lot of dedication and drive to reach for it to grow. For many individuals, it is also a battle to get pass barriers within their lives and society in search of something greater. CHECK: This Individual was noticed by World Rugby.

Sometimes it's more than just a game.

The rugby road is only going to get more exciting as the game grows. They have a lot of Game!

Note:

This write-up was done early 2019. Next weekend, The Cobrats programme will host a tournament where the Girls Touch Rugby section will now feature 2 Age groups! There are many other programmes that promote Girls rugby across the country and the region.

For the next few weeks, the Ladies National 7s team will be competing at the 2019 SEA Games in Manila. It's been a long road for these ladies where the cost is time away from friends and families. All the Best!
